Engaging Hooks That Convert

Engaging Hook

India has 1.4B people.
So why do so few Indian brands cross $1B in revenue?

Body

Let me explain.

There’s a structural paradox in Indian consumer markets.

We are one of the largest populations in the world. We have thousands of brands across dairy, staples, apparel, home care and personal care.

Yet, across most categories, the largest Indian brands barely cross $1B in annual revenue.

  • In dry grocery, Aashirvaad is ~ $1.1B.
  • In packaged food, Parle G is ~ $1B.
  • In home care, Surf Excel is ~ $1.2B.

Many categories don’t even have one brand meaningfully above that mark.

The constraint, more than the demand, is the purchasing power.

India’s per-capita income is still a fraction of the US. Which means consumption is fragmented, ticket sizes are small, and premiumization is slower.

So, you need far more customers to build the same revenue base.

I remember reviewing a D2C brand that had 5M customers and strong recall.

The founder believed scale was inevitable because “India is huge.” But the math didn’t support it. Low ARPU, high distribution costs, and price sensitivity capped revenue expansion.

In contrast, a US brand operating in a higher-income market can reach $1 billion with fewer customers and a higher average spend per user.

The insight is simple but uncomfortable:

Population size does not equal revenue scale. Income concentration and spending power do.

So, when evaluating Indian consumer businesses, let’s ask a harder question: is this a volume story or a purchasing power story?

What do you think?
